Protecting the Dark Sky

The Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve is just 12 km from Morrison Lake. Not only is the Torrance Barrens one of the best places for stargazing in Ontario, in 1999 it was established as the first dark sky preserve in all of Canada. The Torrance Barrens is one of the few stargazing spots in Ontario where you can see the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy.

• Reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting

• Ensure your necessary outdoor lighting follows the Town of Gravenhurst bylaw

  • Outdoor lighting must use shielded, full-cut-off fixtures which ensure all light points downwards.

  • This bylaw applies to all outdoor lighting on cottages, garages, bunkies and private walkways.
